The modern four or five string banjo is an American invention, but it's roots go back into antiquity in the form of African gourd instruments, knowledge of which came to the new world with slaves.

It was a very popular instrument in the latter half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It's heyday was during the jazz era, where it was extremely popular in the home due to affordable prices and the easy which which it could be learned. The instruments themselves became magnificent works of art in their own right.

The American Banjo Museum, the only museum dedicated to banjos anywhere, located in Oklahoma City.
